Three cases of dengue fever and one case of measles have been reported in Bulgaria since the start of the year, the National Center of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCIPD) reported on its website. During the same period last year, no cases of dengue fever or measles had been reported.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by dengue virus. The virus is most frequently transmitted by the bite of mosquitos in the Aedes genus, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

Dr Dilyara Marinova of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Sofia's Military Medical Academy said that mosquitoes are most active before sunrise and around sunset. Mosquitoes are most attracted to the carbon dioxide exhaled by humans, as well as to certain components of sweat. The most reliable way to prevent mosquito bites is applying an insect repellent.
