site.btaUPDATED Magnitude 4.7 Quake Strikes near Plovdiv


A magnitude 4.7 quake was registered in Bulgaria at 3.26 pm on Wednesday, the National Institute in Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NIGGG-BAS) said. It was epicentred 17 km southeast of Plovdiv (South Central Bulgaria) at a depth of 5 km.
No damage to property has been reported.
Initially, it was reported that the magnitude was 4.9 on the Richter scale and the epicentre, 14 km southeast of Plovdiv and 147 km from Sofia.
The quake was felt in and around Asenovgrad, Plovdiv and Sofia, the NIGGG-BAS Deputy Director, Assoc. Prof. Petya Trifonova, told BTA. She added that Plovdiv is a seismic region and since this quake was moderately strong, aftershocks can be expected.
