Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev has returned to the Sofia City Prosecution Office its proposal that the National Assembly strip Delyan Dobrev of his MP immunity, the prosecuting magistracy said Thursday. The reasoning for the proposal is not sufficient and is not backed with the necessary amount of materials giving grounds for a request that Parliament lift a national representative's immunity, the press release reads.

On May 23, the Sofia City Prosecution Office proposed to the Prosecutor General to seek the lifting of the immunity of Delyan Dobrev MP of GERB. The proposal was drawn up in connection with pre-trial proceedings, in which the MP is accused of very serious intentional mismanagement. Dobrev allegedly committed the crime in his capacity as minister of economy, energy and tourism, when he did not organize, coordinate and control the implementation of a resolution of the National Assembly of March 29, 2012 terminating the construction of the Belene nuclear power plant, and did not exercise control on a matter within his competence. In reaction, Dobrev said that the case in question had been officially terminated in April 2022 but is now being reopened to harass him. He described the prosecution service in Bulgaria as "an arm of repression".
