The Immortal Regiment Parade in Sofia is to be stopped by order of Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, Sofia City Hall said in a press release on Tuesday morning. The holding of the Parade was not allowed by Sofia City Hall, but the organizers and participants are still gathering in downtown Sofia with the intention of conducting the event. They intend to use Russian and Soviet flags, which in the current situation could be interpreted as symbols of support for Russia's war with Ukraine, the press release reads.
Police officers stationed on site report that groups of citizens with opposing demands are gathering. To prevent confrontations between them and disruption of the public order, the Immortal Regiment Parade is to be stopped. By law, the participants must leave and the police must take the necessary actions to prevent the Parade from taking place.
The Immortal Regiment Parade is an annual event during which people march carrying pictures of relatives and/or family friends who fought in the anti-fascist resistance and against Nazi Germany during WW II.
