Two suspects have been detained for killing a Bulgarian police officer at the border with Turkiye, said National Investigation Service head and Deputy Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, referring to information from the Turkish authorities. In an interview on bTV, he specified the suspected perpetrator and his aide have been detained and that they are not Turkish nationals.
"We will demand they be extradited and prosecuted in Bulgaria," Sarafov said.
Late on Monday, an unknown individual shot at a Bulgarian border police officer and a serviceperson jointly patrolling the Bulgarian-Turkish border near the village of Golyam Dervent. The officer died.
On Tuesday morning, caretaker Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev told reporters that the perpetrators were illegal migrants.
