Progressive Bulgaria Floor Leader Petar Vitanov said it is "a great day" as it transpired that Greece has agreed to return the remains of Tsar Samuel to Bulgaria. "After centuries away from his homeland, the remains of Tsar Samuel are returning home. This is a historic day for Bulgaria," he wrote in a Facebook post.

Referring to the Greek decision, he said: "With this gesture, it says something that carries more weight than thousands of political speeches – history cannot be erased. Samuel is part of Bulgarian statehood. Part of our collective memory. Part of our history."

On October 3, the remains will be flown to Bulgaria and placed in a sarcophagus at the Church of St Sofia in central Sofia.

VItanov also wrote: “On October 3, let us not be divided into left and right, government and opposition. Let us be Bulgarians."

Yanka Tyankova, an MP from Progressive Bulgaria, also commented the news about Tsar Samuel's remains. “I could never have imagined, even in my boldest dreams, that the remains of Tsar Samuel and artefacts held in Greece would return to where they belong: to their homeland."
