site.btaBulgaria Approves EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement
Bulgaria's caretaker government has decided to approve the Partnership Agreement between the EU and four Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), the government information service said on Wednesday.
Relations between the EU and Mercosur countries have so far been governed by the 1995 Interregional Framework Cooperation Agreement. After more than 25 years of negotiations, the EU and Mercosur reached a political consensus on December 6, 2024, to conclude the negotiation process for an ambitious Partnership Agreement.
The deepening of the EU-Mercosur partnership is expected to bring long-term benefits both for the EU as a whole and for Bulgaria. These include improved market access for goods and services, diversification of trade links and supply chains, investment promotion and enhanced security and capacity to address global challenges. The creation of a free trade area covering a market of over 700 million people will also allow Bulgarian businesses to benefit from the best possible conditions for conducting business in Mercosur markets, the press release said.
Earlier this year, the EU Council authorized the signature of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement, which was formally signed on behalf of the EU on January 17, 2025.
Following this, the Bulgarian government authorized its Permanent Representative to the EU to sign the Partnership Agreement with Mercosur.
