Heart and kidney transplants were recently carried out in Sofia hospitals, according to the Medical Supervision Executive Agency. At the end of last week, a successful donor procedure at the University Hospital Tsaritsa Yoanna-ISUL provided a chance for new life to patients in need. The donor was a 43-year-old woman.

The heart was transplanted at the St. Ekaterina University Hospital to a 34-year-old woman, and a kidney was transplanted to a 64-year-old woman at Sofia's Aleksandrovska Hospital.

The Ministry of Health and the Medical Supervision Executive Agency expressed their sincere condolences to the donor’s family and deep gratitude for their noble decision to donate organs for transplantation.

Earlier in March, lung and kidney transplants were performed following a donor procedure at the Pirogov University Hospital for Emergency Medicine.

As of March 5, 2026, 891 Bulgarians were on the waiting list for organ transplants, according to the Agency’s data.
