The Sofia Inspectorate will provide information on the quantities of waste being cleared in the boroughs of Sofia in the coming days, aiming for transparency on how much work is being completed, Sofia Inspectorate Director Nikolay Nedelkov said at a briefing regarding garbage collection in Sofia on Tuesday.
"Every day we are starting to do better. Even in Lyulin, where there have been problems recently, more equipment has been brought in today and more trucks are being on the ground, with an additional truck expected to be working from Wednesday. The situation in Lyulin should be resolved by the end of January. If necessary, additional shifts will be organized to clear garbage in the borough faster," Nedelkov emphasized. He pointed out that there is no indication or need for a state of emergency to be declared.
Nedelkov stated that the contracts for garbage collection in seven zones of Sofia Municipality have expired, but they have signed an annex to the contracts for four of those zones. He added that a contract was signed with Sofekostroy AD for one of the remaining zones. When asked about the landfill formed in the borough of Slatina, Nedelkov noted that the place is located far from people's homes and is used for greater efficiency and carrying out more cleaning courses.
Several boroughs of Bulgaria's capital have been experiencing waste collection issues since October 2025. The crisis began in the boroughs of Lyulin and Krasno Selo after Sofia City Hall refused to sign new waste collection contracts over inflated prices. At the time, Mayor Terziev said that Sofia Municipality would not pay a protection racket fee and would not yield to "mafia practices". In early December, Izgrev, Poduyane, and Slatina joined the list of boroughs with disrupted waste collection. A temporary collection system has been in force since. During the first days of 2026, citizens reported difficulties with waste collection in several areas, including the Lyulin, Poduyane, and Slatina boroughs. City Hall representatives said the backlog in collection in critical areas of Sofia will be cleared.
