Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) MP Ivaylo Mirchev accused MRF - New Beginning of telling lies regarding their Floor Leader Delyan Peevski's security detail. Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Thursday, he commented on MRF - New Beginning's Wednesday statement which included information on the reasoning and salaries of the security detail of Peevski.
"Firstly, [they lied] that [former Democratic Bulgaria co-chair] Hristo Ivanov had received security from the National Service for Protection (NSP), when he has never had such security, nor a driver since the 45th National Assembly," Mirchev said.
"They lied about the number of security guards, the salaries, the number of berets, the fact that there is no police or gendarmerie, but it is full of police and gendarmerie who have to maintain Peevski's security," he added. On Wednesday, MRF - New Beginning said four officers and sergeants from NSP were assigned to Peevski - according to them, the average gross monthly salary of commissioned officers is around BGN 4,000, while that of sergeants is about BGN 3,000.
"Today, in committee, we will request that Peevski's security detail be removed and that no MP use the National Security Service and special forces for security," Mirchev said.
When asked whether former MP Hristo Ivanov had received an offer of protection from the National Security Service (NSO) due to threats, Mirchev replied that he had received such an offer because of a tip-off about the foreign military intelligence agency of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU). "We checked it out and found that it was of dubious reliability, and Hristo Ivanov is alive and well and in complete safety, as are all the others. For this reason Peevski's security detail should be removed. It is unacceptable that two and a half years after this bogus tip-off, Peevski still has the protection of the NSO, special forces, gendarmerie, traffic police, and the Ministry of Interior," Mirchev stressed.
When asked about the role of GRU in Bulgaria, Mirchev said that their role is very significant, but in the case of this tip-off, it is not true. "We have information about other Bulgarian politicians in whom the GRU had an operational interest. Perhaps soon, after verifying the facts, we will announce this information, because these politicians have never received protection from the NSO, are still alive and well, and have done a lot for Bulgaria," Mirchev added.
Later on Thursday, a meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Internal Security and Public Order is scheduled to discuss and vote on a bill to amend and supplement the National Security Service Act, tabled by Ivaylo Mirchev and a group of MPs on December 10, 2025.
The CC-DB MP also said that Peevski has left his office in the National Assembly building: "His office is now a museum with a curator, he is no longer in [former communist leader] Todor Zhivkov's office."
