The process of adapting of the information systems of the Ministry of Interior and the Road Infrastructure Agency is expected to be completed very soon, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov said during Question Time in Parliament on Friday. Experts are working on aligning the secondary legislation to enable the processing of data and the enforcement of administrative penalties for violations of average speed limits.
Mitov was responding to a question from MP Ivan Belchev of Continue the Change–Democratic Bulgaria, regarding drivers who sharply reduce their speed at the end of monitored road sections, creating conditions for accidents. Belchev pointed out the lack of signs indicating the start, end, and average speed of monitored sections, as well as the fact that drivers entering after the first camera are not monitored. He also suggested organizing awareness campaigns and gathering statistics on accidents in these sections.
Minister Mitov assured that once the procedures are completed, an analysis of the effectiveness of the new system will be conducted. Drawing well-founded conclusions will require time to collect sufficient empirical data. Regarding the placement of signs, Mitov advised drivers to follow all existing speed limit indicators. Concerning the markings for sections monitored for average speed, he added that practices in other countries will be studied and the potential implementation of such markings will be considered.
