A temperature record was registered overnight in Romania, the National Meteorological Administration reported on Thursday. In Siria, Arad County, the temperature reached 27C.
An orange weather alert for extreme heat is in effect for Bucharest and 11 other counties. As of 12:00 local time (also Bulgarian time), thermometers in the Romanian capital already read 36C.
High temperatures are also expected in Oltenia, Muntenia, Banat, Maramures, Dobruja, and much of Transylvania, with forecasts predicting that in some areas temperatures could reach 40C. The temperature-humidity index is expected to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.
Due to the heatwave, there is a risk of severe drought across the country. Authorities are urging residents to use drinking water only for household needs and to refrain from watering gardens.
The heatwave has already affected corn and sunflower crops. Farmers in Oltenia fear they may have nothing to harvest this autumn. In Dolj County, no rainfall has been recorded since June 8. In Vulcan Municipality, many natural springs have dried up, Digi24 reported.
