Romania's reduced excise duty on diesel fuel came into effect on Tuesday. In the morning, the price of diesel at most filling stations in central Bucharest was cheaper by between RON 0.30 and 0.36 (EUR 0.06-0.07) per litre compared with Monday, selling at RON 10.13 (EUR 1.99) per litre. In the provinces, prices are even lower, with local media reporting that the cheapest diesel in Romania is now sold at filling stations in Braila for RON 10.02 (EUR 1.97) per litre.
Petrol has also become cheaper. In Bucharest, the price per litre starts at RON 9.11 (EUR 1.79). In other major Romanian cities such as Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca, prices start at RON 9.20 (EUR 1.80) per litre.
The fuel market situation was discussed on Monday by President Nicusor Dan, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan, Transport Minister Ciprian Serban and representatives of oil companies. A decision was made to create a mechanism for continuous monitoring of fuel supplies in response to international tensions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
It was noted at the meeting that Romania is not currently facing supply difficulties, and fuel purchases are being carried out at prices corresponding to the international market.
On April 3, the Romanian government adopted an emergency ordinance reducing the excise duty on diesel by RON 0.30 (EUR 0.059) per litre due to the conflict in the Middle East. The reduction amounts to almost 11%.
