The Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state and the opinion of its citizens will be respected by Romania, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said after attending the informal European Council in Brussels on Friday.

His comment came a day after Moldovan President Maia Sandu said at a press conference in Chisinau that the majority of the country’s population does not support the idea of unification with Romania. She referred to data from the latest Public Opinion Barometer conducted in September 2025, according to which nearly 46% of Moldovan citizens oppose the idea, while just over 33% support it. Earlier this month, in an interview with British journalists Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, hosts of the UK’s largest podcast, Sandu said she would vote in favour of unification with Romania if a referendum on the issue were held.

“What I want most for the Republic of Moldova is for us to be at peace, for our citizens to be at peace and in safety, and for us to remain part of the free world. These, from my point of view, are the most important things, especially in an increasingly difficult regional and international context. This can be ensured through the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union and it could possibly be ensured if the Republic of Moldova were under the protection of Romania. For the first plan, for European integration, we have the support of the majority of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” Sandu said on Thursday.

On Friday, the Romanian President, in turn, explained that since Moldova’s integration into the European Union is supported by the majority of the country’s citizens and is its stated goal, Romania will support it.

“I am optimistic that this will happen. If, in the medium or distant future, the majority of citizens hold a different view, we will act according to the situation. For now, we respect the sovereignty expressed through the opinion of the citizens,” Dan added.
