site.btaTurkiye Rejects New Greek Maritime Spatial Planning Map
Turkiye does not recognize the updated Maritime Spatial Planning Map published by Greece as part of the European Union's map of the same name, as announced by Yoncu Keceli, spokesperson for the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a published statement on the institution's website. According to the Ministry, the map published by Greece is unilateral and the indicates areas overlap with those of Turkiye.
Keceli explained that the map violates Turkish zones in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, showing a disregard for the fundamentals of maritime law, and attempting to impose acceptance of its exclusive economic zone in the Eastern Mediterranean through this map, despite having not officially declared it. He added that Turkiye does not accept these actions, considers them to be contrary to the law and defines them as a fait accompli.
The ministry noted that Greece's attempts to legitimize these plans for exclusive economic zones and the outer limits of its continental shelf without defining them with its neighbours are unilateral steps doomed to failure and contrary to international law.
