US President George W. Bush conferred with Bulgarian Prime Minister Ivan Kostov at the White House on April 23, 2001, according to BTA’s archives. The Bulgarian Prime Minister’s visit was a working one and took place at the invitation of US Vice President Richard Cheney.

Kostov and the Bulgarian delegation arrived in Washington on April 22, 2001, with the meeting with Bush and Cheney held the following day in the Roosevelt Room at the White House. He was accompanied by Foreign Minister Nadezhda Mihaylova (now Neynsky), Chair of the Foreign and Integration Policy Committee of the 38th National Assembly Asen Agov, Deputy Foreign Minister Vassiliy Takev, and Deputy Defence Minister Velizar Shalamanov.

“Sources from the Bulgarian delegation expressed pleasant surprise to Bulgarian journalists covering the visit that they had been received at the White House by President Bush,” BTA’s Washington correspondent reported.
