Deputy Interior Minister Toni Todorov, who spoke at a forum entitled "Doctors in the crosshairs. How to heal damaged trust" here on Tuesday, reported that according to police statistics, medical personnel were assaulted 96 times in 2023, 99 times in 2024, and 75 times between January 1 and September 10, 2025. Todorov stated that the number of reported attacks is alarming and suggested that institutions and professional organizations should work together to tackle aggression against healthcare experts.
The Deputy Minister said that analysis of the reports shows a trend where attacks on healthcare experts are prevalent in certain regions of the country and added that the reasons for this may be complex. A clear profile of the perpetrators of such attacks is emerging, namely people from socially vulnerable groups with low economic status and educational attainment, Todorov said.
The forum is part of the Bulgarian Medical Association's national campaign #FightTheAnger.
