No Bulgarian citizens are reported to have been hurt in a deadly funicular crash in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said Thursday.

The number of fatalities in the accident reached 17, according to the Portuguese emergency services quoted by the world news media. 15 people reportedly died on impact and two more succumbed to their injuries in hospital. 21 are being treated for injuries. The identity and nationality of the injured have not been disclosed by the authorities.

Portugal has declared Thursday a day of national mourning.

An investigation is underway to established what caused the cable of the funicular to snap, derailing one car and sending it crashing into a building.

The Foreign Ministry said that the Bulgarian Embassy is following the developments in the case.
