"I am optimistic,” responded GERB leader Boyko Borissov to a journalist’s question about whether the world has a chance to breathe a sigh of relief from the war in Ukraine.

Borissov commented on the war and the recent talks hosted by US President Donald Trump during a visit he paid to a church under construction in Plovdiv together with Plovdiv Metropolitan Nikolay.

Borissov praised US President Trump for his courage to take responsibility in organising a high-stakes meeting with his Russian counterpart President Vladimir Putin. He pointed out that President Trump had invited the President of the European Commission and the leaders of the largest European countries - Britain, France, Germany, and Italy—and together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, they took quite the right steps. Borissov added that he is optimistic about the outcome of those talks with the EU after participating in an online meeting with the leaders of the European People’s Party Tuesday.

The GERB leader also said he believes that President Putin will use the opportunity to end the geopolitical isolation he has found himself in since the start of the war. "No matter how much some underestimated President Trump’s qualities, for me he made an exceptionally strong move—one which, if successful, will be successful for everyone. If it fails, it will be bad, especially for Europe, and bad for our region as well," he added.
