The consumer protection working group under the Coordination Council for Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone held a meeting on Friday, said the Ministry of Economy and Industry. The session brought together representatives of institutions, agencies, and organizations committed to ensuring a smooth and effective transition to the euro, with particular focus on consumer rights and safeguards.

The Economy Ministry and the Ministry of Finance presented recent revisions to the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, highlighting mechanisms for oversight, control, and consumer protection during the currency and price conversion process.

Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Doncho Barbalov stressed the importance of active engagement from the Consumer Protection Commission, business representatives, and civil society organizations. “We rely on joint efforts to respond swiftly to any warning signs or risks. Together, we will build a system that not only monitors but also supports people in adapting to the new currency,” he noted.

From August 8 to October 8, 2025, control bodies will issue written instructions, rather than impose sanctions, for violations detected during the preparatory period, as outlined in the relevant secondary legislation.

After October 8, these bodies will gain authority to impose sanctions for violations related to the euro introduction, including incorrect price labelling and failure to provide dual pricing.

To support a smooth euro adoption, the Consumer Protection Commission, along with other institutions, will conduct information campaigns across 165 municipal centres. The initiative is aimed at traders, business representatives, and local authorities, including in smaller communities with limited access to timely information. Informational materials have been prepared to build trust and foster dialogue.
