BTA Director General Kiril Valchev spoke before the parliamentary Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of the European Funds here on Thursday. He briefed the MPs on the news agency’s mission and its activities on various European topics.

Valchev said that BTA is a key source of information on European matters in Bulgaria, as well as of information from Bulgaria to Europe, which is the focus of the Committee's work. "The second topic you are dealing with - the EU funds - is something BTA has good experience with," he noted. The BTA Director General suggested to think about a lasting strategy - in terms of finances and personnel - for the information presence of Bulgaria in Europe and of the European Union in Bulgaria: “A strategy for transmitting information about the Bulgarian experience in the EU to the countries that are about to join it, a strategy for the Bulgarian communities with a great emphasis on the Bulgarian media and, finally, finding a lasting and systematic solution to the issue of co-financing of EU projects”, explained Valchev. "My plea is to draw attention to the fact that institutions like ours probably have a much bigger problem with co-financing, which cannot be provided from their own budgets," he added.

Committee Chair Dimitar Gardev (There Is Such a People) said that BTA is always turned toward Bulgarians abroad, this is its main goal. "Everyone interested in information knows what BTA is. The opening of BTA National Press Clubs, especially in the Balkan countries, is commendable. The great desire of all of us is for BTA to become the leading Balkan agency and to start producing content. It is very important that we raise our issues and that our point of view is heard, not the general information flow," Gardev said.

Atidzhe Alieva-Veli MP of MRF - New Beginning praised BTA for the good practice of promoting important issues and listening to the voice of Bulgarian citizens, which BTA transmits at the level of the European Union. Alieva-Veli congratulated Kiril Valchev “on his continuous efforts to upgrade, expand and improve the work of BTA, because in our modern times receiving timely information is extremely valuable; reliable information in times of misinformation is even more valuable”.
