Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) President Christo Pimpirev delivered a public lecture on "Half a Century of Bulgarian Scientific Research in Antarctica" during an event in Ohrid, North Macedonia. Pimpirev looked back on the history, the achievements and the importance of the Bulgarian presence on the icy continent, BAI said in a press release on Friday.
The event took place at the invitation of the University St Kliment Ohridski - Bitola, the University's Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality - Ohrid, the University's Hydrobiological Institute - Ohrid, and the Bulgarian Consulate General in Bitola.
Bulgarian guests accompanying Prof. Pimpirev opened a photo exhibition on Antarctica, screened the popular science film Antarctica by journalist Zhivko Konstantinov, and presented Iglika Trifonova's book Christo Pimpirev: The Antarctic Hitchhiker.
During their visit the Bulgarians were briefed on the work of the Hydrobiological Institute in Ohrid. They travelled to the Monastery of St Jovan Bigorski, where Pimpirev donated his book on polar research.
Former Sofia University rector Boyan Biolchev, North Macedonia cinematographer Fejmi Daut and Marina Velikova, who contributed to the photo exhibition, were among the guests. Daut and Velikova took part, respectively, in the 33rd and 32nd Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions.
The event was part of the efforts to expand Bulgaria’s scientific cooperation with North Macedonia and to popularize the contribution of Bulgarian scientists to international Antarctic research.
