site.btaSofia Hosts Forum Discussing Copyright in Different Countries

The situation with copyright and collective organizations in different countries was discussed here on Thursday at the General Assembly of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). The forum was moderated by CISAC Vice-President Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
Bulgarian screenwriter and film producer Lilo Petrov said that artists in Bulgaria sign unfavourable contracts that take away their rights without remuneration. He added that despite Bulgaria's EU membership, the legal framework in the country is dysfunctional, as directives are partially implemented and ineffective. There is no state mechanism for approving royalty rates. The dire situation is making some artists consider protesting.
Kazakh film and music creator Saken Belgibayev reported that his country has an ambition to develop the creative industry, but most people do not realize that its foundation is copyright. The main challenge, he said, is a lack of education both among citizens and legislators. Training, master classes and international partnerships are needed to raise awareness.
The first panel of the forum was dedicated to the role of artificial intelligence in the cultural industry.
This was the first instance of Bulgaria hosting the CISAC General Assembly in cooperation with Musicautor.
