site.btaKey Questions on Euro Changeover Remain Unanswered, Says VP Iotova

Those who submitted the request for the convergence report and are responsible for decision-making seem afraid to answer specific questions from the public and to take clear positions, Vice President Iliana Iotova told reporters here on Tuesday. She was speaking in Sozopol ahead of her participation in the conference “The Sozopol Brand and the Relics of the Baptist,” commenting on the ongoing public debate over the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria.
According to Iotova, the major national conversation on the euro changeover has not taken place. “There has been no debate about the current state of the eurozone either. Insults, labels, and all kinds of narratives are being spread from different directions, but on the meaningful and important questions people care about, there are no answers,” she said.
The Vice President said that a referendum would have prompted more questions, answers, and discussions, helping to address public concerns.
“We are joining a club, but do we know what the condition of this club is, what its parameters are, what the forecast for its development is?” she asked.
Iotova did not say whether she personally supports or opposes the adoption of the euro.
“I am familiar with the experiences of both the countries that first joined the eurozone and those in Central and Eastern Europe that followed. I would gladly and actively join this debate…I cannot tell people how to vote, but they must be informed and make their own decisions,” Iotova said.
