The Bulgarian population's life expectancy at birth, calculated for the 2022 - 2024 period, is 75.6 years, the National Statistical Institute said on Thursday. This marks an increase by 2.1 years compared to the 2021 - 2023 period.
Different mortality rates among males and females, as well as among urban and rural populations, resulted in differences in the life expectancy at birth for these population categories.
Life expectancy at birth for the male population is 71.9 years, while for females it is 7.4 years higher, at 79.3 years. Compared to 2014, last year, the life expectancy at birth increased by 0.7 years for males, while it increased by 1.0 years for females.
In the 2022-2024 period, life expectancy of the urban population (76.4 years) is 2.9 years higher than that of the rural (73.5 years). Compared to 2023, an increase of 2.0 years was observed for the urban population and of 2.2 years for the rural.
Life expectancy at the age of 65 is 16.7 years. The respective values for males and females are 14.5 years and 18.6 years. Compared to 2023, the life expectancy at the age of 65 increased by 1.5 years in 2024. Life expectancy at birth varies from 71.9 years in Vidin Region to 77.3 years in Sofia Region. Women live longer than men in all regions across the country. The biggest sex-based difference was observed in Vidin Region (9.2 years) and the smallest, in Sofia Region and Shumen Region (6.6 years).
