During Friday's Question Time in Parliament, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that at this stage, he will not propose changes in the Cabinet's composition. He was taking a question by Morality, Unity, Honour (MECh) Floor Leader Kiril Veselinksi whether the Prime Minister plans to demand the resignation of Interior Minister Daniel Mitov.

According to Veselinski, Bulgarian society has a "lasting feeling of a mafia monopoly" at the Interior Ministry. He gave the example of a homicide case in Haskovo, as well as allegations of police protection for smuggling channels.

Zhelyazkov said that the reactions of Minister Mitov and the Interior Ministry at this stage do not raise any doubt in the Prime Minister's mind about Mitov's good and professional intention to bring order to the system.

"I share your view that institutions owe a lot to society, both in terms of prevention and punishment for all criminal behaviour. It is no secret that not only at the Ministry of Interior but in all control institutions, similar practices of protection for criminals and influence peddling are in place. The work that the Government should do is in the organisational aspect, to establish or make better functioning the internal control and verification mechanisms," the Prime Minister said.
