GERB leader Boyko Borissov congratulated Pope Leo XIV following his election on Thursday. “May his mission be guided by wisdom. May he be a voice of peace and compassion,” Borissov wrote on Facebook. 

“Bulgaria values its friendship with the Holy See, and we will continue to uphold our relationship based on mutual respect and shared values,” he noted.

Earlier in the day, white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, signaling the election of a new pope. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected and has taken the name Leo XIV, according to a live broadcast on the Holy See’s official portal, Vatican News.
