The lowest temperatures in Bulgaria in May 2025 will be between 2 C and 7 C, and frost is possible on some days in the first half of the month, probably between the 11th and the 13th. The highest temperatures will be between 28 C and 33 C, Mariyana Popova of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) told BTA on Wednesday. Popova presented the NIMH Weather Forecasting Department’s weather outlook for May.

The average monthly temperature in Bulgaria in the next 31 days will be around the month’s norm, and so will be the amount of precipitation, she said.

The average monthly temperatures in the various temperature zones are expected to be close to the usual levels, which are 16 C to 19 C in most of the country, 15 C to 16 C along the Black Sea coast and in high-altitude valleys, 12 C to 14 C in the lower parts of mountains, and 2 C to 5 C at elevations over 2,000 m.

Looking at the precipitation zones, the amounts of precipitation will be close to the respective norms, which are between 50 and 70 litres per square metre in most of the country, 30 to 50 l/sq m along the coast and in the Struma River Valley, and 70 to 140 l/sq m in mountains and foothills.

May will start with unseasonably cold weather, but by the middle of the first 10-day period temperatures will be above the usual levels. After that, they will drop a little, coming close to the norm. The initial 10-day period will see unsettled conditions, with brief showers and thunderstorms being likely. Some days, more likely in the latter half of the period, will have intense storms and large amounts of precipitation in isolated areas. Less precipitation is expected around May 3-5 and towards the end of the first 10 days.

During the second 10-day period in May, atmospheric conditions will be unsettled again. Mornings will be mostly sunny. Afternoons will bring cumulus cloud, brief thundery showers and temporarily stronger winds. Hailstorms are possible. Temperatures will be close to the usual levels.

In the last third of May (days 21st to 31st), unsettled atmospheric conditions and variable weather (with showers) will continue during the early half of the period while temperatures will be close to the usual levels. Towards the close of the month, precipitation is expected to be scarce, and temperatures will go up, possibly exceeding the norms, Popova said.
