site.btaBulgaria to Become First European Country with Operational AP1000 Nuclear Reactor

Bulgaria will be the first country in Europe to have an operational AP1000-type reactor, Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov said during a forum organized by Westinghouse in Sofia. He added that the country already has an approved site and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project, and work is currently underway on financing and coordination with the European Commission.
Zhecho Stankov also reported that on Monday he spoke with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright regarding investment opportunities in the Kozloduy N-plant. According to Stankov, the Bulgarian state should "grab the opportunity offered with projects such as Units 7 and 8 of the Kozloduy N-plant" and has clearly stated that Bulgarian companies should participate in the project. He welcomed the signing of numerous memorandums on Monday, which will give Bulgarian firms the opportunity to participate in what he called "the largest project of this decade - and possibly the next".
According to the Energy Minister, the new units will create conditions for the return of Bulgarian experts with international experience. "At its peak, the site will employ around 10,000 people," Stankov noted.
