On February 17, 1990 the Extraordinary Congress of the Independent Bulgarian Trade Unions began. Against the backdrop of an economic crisis in the country and strike actions on the streets, what started as an extraordinary congress became the founding congress of the future Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria, which to date has over 300,000 members.
