Today we celebrate our enduring national ideal of freedom, unity and statehood, President Rumen Radev said in his speech on the occasion of the 146th anniversary of the Liberation of Bulgaria. The head of State attended a military tattoo in central Sofia.

“By preserving the spirit and gratitude of our people, we strengthen the foundations of our present so that we can look more confidently to the future. In our troubling times, when borders are being swept away and weapons are increasingly silencing reason, all Bulgarian politicians must watch over the sovereignty of our homeland. All Bulgarians must believe in our own strength, unite our efforts to build a free and just Bulgaria,” the President added.

“Let us continue to defend the freedom of our conscience, the independence of our actions, the dignity and honor of the Fatherland,” the head of State further said.

He recalled that the holiday had been cancelled in the past and is under attack today. According to Rumen Radev, "the holiday has such a moral charge that it has become a victory of the ideal over nihilism, of the healthy Bulgarian root over the winds of political conjuncture."

Rumen Radev urged people to remember the historical feat and sacrifice of the Bulgarian volunteers and the soldiers of all nationalities from the army of the Russian Emperor Alexander II, who put an end to the five-century Ottoman rule.

According to the President, March 3 is a day of Bulgarian freedom, a fateful watershed that predetermined the birth of a new Bulgaria.
