site.btaTraditional Embroidery Shown in Exhibition at Varna Library
Traditional Bulgarian embroidery is shown in an exhibition in the Varna Regional Library. It presents framed replicas of embroidery designs from shirts and aprons of local costumes, made by women from a community center in the nearby town of Suvorovo.
The embroideries in traditional Bulgarian costumes were made on various occasions and have a special meaning, Suvorovo community center officials told BTA. The patterns include geometric forms and signs, and symbols of the mother goddess, the directions of the world, symbols of masculinity and femininity, among others. The colors that are used also add meaning to the embroideries.
In addition to the needlework by the craftswomen from Suvorovo, the exhibition also includes books from the thematic collection of the Varna library, including books on needlework and ethnographic publications, head librarian Kristiana Dimcheva told BTA.
The exhibition is dedicated to Bulgaria's national holiday as well as the International Women's Day, and can be viewed until March 10.
