In February and March, the Interior Ministry's Border Police General Directorate will organise an awareness campaign about Bulgaria's accession to Schengen by air and sea, Director General Commissioner Anton Zlatanov told bTV Saturday.

The reason for it are the changes in the way border control will be carried out at airports and ports in the country. According to Zlatanov, the airport security check will remain - it is a check of luggage and hand luggage of travellers, which is carried out by airport security officers.

Anton Zlatanov reiterated that Bulgaria has fulfilled all the conditions for entering Schengen by land as well, but because of internal political problems in Austria this country is not yet a full member of the border-free area. He quoted figures according to which 180,000 illegal border crossing attempts were prevented in 2023, while 16,000 people have been detained.
