Agricultural producers in Bulgaria suffer from the lack of equality between subsidies and the distribution of subsidies within the country is not regulated in the best way possible, President Rumen Radev said in New York late on Tuesday.

Previous governments should be asked why they facilitated such a mechanism for dividing the money, Radev said this in response to a question about the farmers' protests in Bulgaria.

"A country is not governed by running away from responsibility. A country is not governed by qualifications, by slogans, by opposing some sectors of the economy and society with others." The country has to be governed in such a way that it wins the confidence of the people and this will happen when the government puts their interests first, the head of State said.

Producers from the agriculture sector remain on standby and ready to protest, the Initiative committee of the nationwide agricultural protests said late on Tuesday.

Farming equipment and people will be on standby in a parking lot in Dolni Bogrov, near Sofia, until the signing of a memorandum with the Government on the parameters agreed on with the Government on September 19, 2023, the initiative committee said.

Representatives of the farmers met earlier on Tuesday at the Council of Ministers with Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, Finance Minister Asen Vassilev and Agriculture and Food Minister Kiril Vatev. Denkov said that the Government can prpose a solution or explain how they will seek one for each of the points raised by the protesters. After the meeting, representatives of the sector discussed at length their next steps.

The initiative committee warned that in case a memorandum is not signed with the authorities on Wednesday, the protesters will come out again for effective protest actions in the centre of Sofia.
