The operation to rescue American spelunker Mark Dickey from the Morca cave, southern Turkiye, was extremely difficult, Anri Hazday, member of the Board of Cave Rescue Bulgaria told BTA on Tuesday. Dickey was extracted from the Morca cave in Taurus Mountain on Tuesday night, shortly after midnight, by Bulgarian and international rescue teams.

The forty-year-old scientist had been stranded in the cave since September 2, when he suffered a gastrointestinal bleeding during an international expedition into the cave.

The rescue operation took ten days. The actual extraction started on September 9 and took some 58 hours, Hazday said. Dickey was the flown by helicopter to a hospital. His condition is stable.

The entire Bulgarian team has already left the cave and is preparing for departure. Four of the Bulgarian team will be back on Wednesday morning, while the rest should be back on Thursday. The rescuers are very tired, however, all of them are in good physical and mental condition.

The Bulgarian team was led by Ivo Kolchakov, a paramedic at Cave Rescue Bulgaria.

Hazday reported that many of the Bulgarians, who participated in this rescue mission, also took part in the evacuation of injured during the earthquakes in Turkiye in early February 2023.
