Bulgarian Demographer Gives Lecture on Rescue of Bulgarian Jews' Rescue in Buenos Aires

Bulgarian demographer Spas Tashev gave a lecture on the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War to history students at the University of Buenos Aires. The event is part of the cultural programme of the Bulgarian Embassy in Argentina and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews. The projects are funded under the National Programme for the Commemoration of the Anniversary adopted by the Council of Ministers, the Bulgarian Embassy in Buenos Aires said on its website on Friday.

The lecture took place on August 16 in the framework of a seminar entitled "80 years since the Final Solution", led by Professor Marcia Ross, with the added subtitle "The special case of Bulgaria". Dean Ricardo Manetti congratulated the lecturers for the interesting topic they will be presenting to the students, and Bulgarian Ambassador Stoyan Mihailov addressed the guests, thanking them for their presence and highlighting the importance of the history of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews, in which civil society plays a key role.

Tashev presented his report on the the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War, which will be published in the online journal of the Department of History at the University of Buenos Aires. For his part, Prof. Marcia Ross had discovered interesting facts and stories about Argentinians who resided in Bulgaria during the events, as well as Bulgarians living in Argentina, the Bulgarian Embassy said.

The event was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, members of the Bulgarian and Jewish communities and history students. At the end of the lecture, after the presentations of the two professors, an interesting discussion took place with many additional questions posed by the audience. The event lasted over three hours, with students showing particular interest in additional material on events in Bulgaria during the Second World War, and on student exchange opportunities, the Embassy added.
