The market for new cars in European Union countries grew in June by 17.8% annually to reach 1 million new registrations, according to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) released on Wednesday in Brussels.

The annual growth in new car sales is impressive compared to June 2022, when fewer new cars were sold, mostly due to a shortage of car parts during that period, ACEA reported.

In June sales increased in all EU countries, except Hungary (-1.4%). Growth was also recorded in the EU's leading car markets - Germany (+24.8%), Spain (+13.3%), France (+11.5%) and Italy (+9.1%).

In Bulgaria, 3,803 new cars were registered in June, an increase of 34.7% on June in 2022 (2,824 new cars), according to ACEA data.

In May 2023, the number of newly registered cars in Bulgaria was 2,760.

The share of registered new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the EU increased in June 2023 to 15.1% of all new registrations, (10.7% in June 2022).

In Bulgaria, the share of newly registered electric vehicles in June was 4.5%. Most new cars were petrol-powered at 74%, followed by diesel-powered at 18.4% and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) at 2.5%.

New registrations of electric vehicles increased in Bulgaria by 140.8% on an annual basis. In June they were 171, and in the same month of 2022 they were 71.
