The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, the first one in Turkiye, is expected to start generating electricity in 2024, Salih Sari, Head of the Department for Nuclear Infrastructure Development at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, said at the Nuclear Power Plants Expo & Summit in Istanbul, as quoted by Turkish media.

A batch of nuclear fuel was delivered to Akkuyu on April 27. According to Sari, Turkiye is in the middle of negotiations with Russia and South Korea to build a second nuclear power plant in his country, in the Black Sea district of Sinop. Talks are also underway for a third nuclear power plant, in the European part of Turkiye. A fourth such project is envisaged as well.

The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Project is being implemented on the Mediterranean coast under a cooperation agreement signed between the governments of Russia and Turkiye on May 12, 2010.
