Between 45% and 55% of the energy in Greece is produces from renewable energy sources, said here Tuesday George Kremlis, former Principal Advisor to the Greek Prime Minister on energy, climate, environment and circular economy issues, and European Commission honorary director. He was among the speakers in the Green Week 2023 forum on green transition in central and eastern Europe, taking place in Sofia Tuesday through Thursday.

The event is organized by dir.bg and 3E News with the media partnership of BTA.

Kremlis said that Greece is the world leader with the share of electricity output from RES and expressed hope that his country will continue to develop the circular economy after this Sunday's elections.

Greece, together with Romania and on Bulgaria's initiative, can strengthen cooperation in the region, open the EU doors to the Western Balkans and build a new architecture adequate to the new challenges, he said. He said the new challenges are climate change, which is worsened by the war, and the food crisis that emerged after the COVID pandemic.

Kremlis argued that Greece sets a good model of green transition thanks to its pioneering climate law, which builds on the EU climate legislation and aims to cut emissions by 80% by 2040.

On some days, Greece goes entirely on electricity produced from sun, wind and water, the speaker added. He said that the ambitious transition is mostly due to the private sector, supported by the State. The government is currently supporting wind and solar energy storage projects, and this type of investment receives more than 70 preferences from the State and is eligible for EU funding, he said.

He added that Greece aspires to fully abandon lignite coal by 2028 "because we only have one planet and we cannot afford to destroy it", to use his words.
