A school-leaving prom for socially disadvantaged young people was held in Sofia on Monday. The official guests at the annual event included President Rumen Radev, Vice President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev and Ministers Lazar Lazarov of Labour and Social Policy, Sasho Penov of Education and Science and Vesela Letcheva of Youth and Sports.

The prom was part of a charity initiative of the President and was financed through a fundraising campaign.

The President told the school graduates: "Remember, the road lies ahead for you. Your journey is up to you, but we look to you with huge hope, because you are the future of Bulgaria." He wished the young people good luck.

Presenting Minka Kirilova, a former disadvantaged school-leaver who is in her second year of studies at Sofia's New Bulgarian University, President Radev said she has fulfilled her dream of publishing a book of poems.

Kirilova said: "I cannot begin to describe the feeling of making one of my most deeply cherished dreams come true. You have to experience it to know what it is like. I want to tell you to pursue your dreams and to believe in them always, regardless of the challenges that life raises for you. Difficulties make us who we are. You should face them smiling, because they provide an opportunity for you to prove to yourself and the world that everything is possible."
