Prof. Michel Zink, member of the French Academy, will be awarded an honorary doctorate of the St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University at a ceremony on Monday, the university press centre said.

The proposal for the honorary title of the oldest higher education institution in Bulgaria came from the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology.

Prof. Zink is one of the most eminent contemporary French intellectuals, philologist, medievalist, writer, professor at the Sorbonne and the College de France. He has been a member of the French Academy since 2017 and of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres since 2000. He is a member of foreign and national academies: the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Medieval Academy of America, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, the Academy of Alsace, the Academy of Versailles, the Academy of Lyon. He is a corresponding member of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence and of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The proposal of the Department of Romance Studies of the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology to award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Sofia University to Prof. Zink is based on his high scientific achievements in literary studies, on his innovative philological approach to medieval literature, on his enviable reputation as an intellectual, erudite, and media scholar with remarkable qualities as a teacher, researcher, essayist, communicator, publisher, writer, and translator.
