Sofia's Socialists have kept their promise to have the dedication panel on the Soviet Army Monument restored, the party’s Sofia Chapter Chair Ivan Takov said on Sunday. He checked the progress of the restoration work and cleaning of the area together with Stanislav Mladenov, leader of the Socialists in the Vrabnitsa Borough who came up with the initiative about two months ago. "As we have planned it, the monument is renovated and cleaned, ready for the festive May 9," Takov said.

"I hope that further vandalism will be prevented. From now on, together with the Regional Administration and City Hall we should think about ways for repair and overall reinforcement of the monument," the Sofia Socialists' leader commented. "This is a favourite place for Sofianites of all ages, and they should be able to visit it safely".

He added that the purpose of monuments is to preserve history. "We understand this purpose, which is why we do not dismantle monuments built by our ancestors but preserve them. Destructive thinking and destructive conduct are futureless. They doom their proponents to repeat the mistakes of the past. It is our responsibility to prevent this from happening," he argued.

Several tiles of the dedication panel in question, which reads "To the Soviet Army Liberator from the Grateful Bulgarian People", were smashed on February 23 with a hammer by a 61-year-old man. When a police patrol, responding to an alert, detained him in the area, he told the law enforcers that he had committed the act in protest against Russia’s war in Ukraine.
