National Ombudsman Reports Increasing Number of Complaints Related to Patients' Rights

Sofia, July 1 (BTA) - Reporting on her work in 2015 in the area of healthcare, National Ombudsman Maya Manolova spoke about an increase in the number of complaints related to patients' rights. In the entire 2015 such complaints totalled 272, while they stand at 221 in January-May 2016.

The majority of the complaints concern denied access to treatment due to expensive medicines, medical errors or delayed aid. Two other problems are situations in which patients are asked to pay additional own money for treatment and the complex regulations in respect of restoration of health insurance rights.

Manolova said she has made concrete recommendations to address the problems which mainly concern caps on out-of-hospital and hospital aid, the drugs policy, medical expertise and other areas of healthcare.
