An “Innovations in Vineyards” demonstration day was held at the Agricultural University of Plovdiv’s experimental farm in Brestnik on Wednesday. Participants saw innovative specialized machinery and practical demonstrations by leading Bulgarian and international companies.
Welcoming participants, University Rector Prof. Boryana Ivanova highlighted the event as a meeting point for scientists and practitioners, academics and growers, students and businesses. She pointed out that the university’s role is to bring research from the laboratory to the field while turning practical challenges into scientific solutions.
Ivanova said that vineyard management has become increasingly challenging due to hotter summers, drought, hail and other extreme weather events. She stressed that farmers must use water, fertilizers and crop protection products more precisely, while addressing labor shortages, rising productivity demands and growing expectations for quality and environmental sustainability.
She also emphasized that technology cannot replace knowledge of vines, varieties, soils and local conditions, noting that machinery is most effective when carefully selected, economically justified and operated by well-trained professionals. She highlighted that the Plovdiv Agricultural University plays an important role in this.
A key guest was Prof. Davide Bianchi of the State University of Milan, Italy, a specialist in viticulture and modern vineyard management technologies.
