The European Commission welcomed an initiative by 19 EU Member States to establish the first joint European project of public interest in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The project aims to develop decentralized and publicly accessible services.

The project will be used to manage computing resources, production and services that go beyond the current state of technology in their respective fields, the Commission said. The EU aims to become a global leader in AI, it added.

The participating countries are Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. Eleven of the countries will provide State aid to the project's direct participants, the Commission said.
