site.btaCabinet Revises Roadmap for Completion of Struma Motorway

The Government adopted a decision amending Decision No. 62 of February 12, 2025, approving a roadmap for the completion of the Struma Motorway, the Government Information Service said on Wednesday.

Regional Development Minister Ivan Shishkov said in August that the realistic deadline for completing the Struma Motorway in the direction from Kulata to Sofia is 2031.

The amendments are intended to ensure continued coordination and constructive dialogue with non-governmental organizations during the implementation of the project and to take account of all environmental considerations in the preparation and construction of Lot 3.2 of the motorway.

The decision also updates the deadlines under Section I of the roadmap to reflect the current state of the project and address delays accumulated after years of disagreement between institutions and NGOs over the technical solution for completing the strategically important motorway.

The Government said the Struma Motorway is directly linked to national security and transport connectivity with neighbouring EU and NATO member states Romania and Greece.

To ensure that all environmental considerations are reflected in a timely and appropriate manner and that active cooperation with environmental NGOs continues, the Environment and Water Minister will be responsible for issuing the order establishing the working group and for any subsequent changes to its composition, if necessary.
