Nomad Capital Group EOOD intends to acquire the now-defunct ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 thermal power plant (TPP) in Stara Zagora Region (Southeastern Bulgaria) as well as the plant's operator, ContourGlobal Operations Bulgaria AD, it transpires from a notification submitted by the company to the Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) on August 10. The notification, published on the CPC website, requests an assessment of the transaction’s impact on effective competition in the electricity market.
The CPC states that the acquiring company is not currently conducting any business operations. The Sofia-based Nomad Capital Group was registered at the end of March 2026 and has a capital of EUR 50,000.
The CPC will issue a final decision based on the provisions of the Competition Protection Act after conducting a comprehensive assessment of the notified transaction, the press release reads. In this regard, any third party may submit information or express its written opinion regarding the transaction and the impact it may have on effective competition in the relevant market in Bulgaria.
The Maritsa East 3 TPP - Bulgaria's second-largest coal-fired plant - ceased operation in April 2025 following the expiration of its contract with the State for guaranteed purchase prices. Its majority owner is the US company ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3. The State-owned National Electricity Company (NEK) holds a 27% share.
