The BTA photo archive has a photo dated August 11, 1972 from the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing showing the arrival of the Olympic flame from Turkiye.

The torch passes through Bulgarian territory on its way to Munich, Germany, for the 20th Summer Olympic Games, to be held from August 26 to September 11, 1972.

In the photo, Turkish athlete Ömer Gültekin hands the Olympic Flame to the first Bulgarian torchbearer, 65-year-old Boris Haralampiev, who competed in the marathon at the 11th Summer Olympic Games, held from August 1 to 16, 1936, in Berlin, Germany.

Bulgaria had a particularly strong showing at Munich in 1972.

According to the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, a total of 130 Bulgarian competitors (106 men and 24 women) participated in 15 sports. They won 21 medals: 6 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze, placing ninth in the overall medal table.
