Wholesale prices for staple food products, fruit and vegetables in Bulgaria moved in different directions in the week ending on August 7, according to the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets. The wholesale food market index fell by 0.21% to 2.331 points, compared with 2.336 points a week earlier. The index's base level of 1.000 points dates back to 2005.

Among vegetables, the average wholesale price of green lettuce recorded the biggest weekly increase, rising by 16.35% to EUR 0.74 per kiloggamme. Cucumber prices also increased, by 9.48% to EUR 1.27/kg, while onions rose by 6.53% to EUR 0.62/kg and potatoes by 2.94% to EUR 0.63/kg.

At the other end of the scale, cabbage saw the biggest price drop, falling by 9.56% to EUR 0.53/kg. Tomato prices also declined, by 7.06% to EUR 1.37/kg, while carrots fell by 5.24% to EUR 0.76/kg and courgettes by 2.21% to EUR 0.62/kg. Pepper prices also fell, with green peppers down by 4.48% to EUR 1.11/kg and red peppers down by 0.9% to EUR 1.77/kg.

Among fruit, only lemons became more expensive during the week in review, with their average wholesale price rising by 1.96% to EUR 2.18/kg. Peaches recorded the biggest price decline, falling by 10.71% to EUR 1.20/kg, followed by apples, down 3.28% to EUR 1.24/kg, and apricots, down 1.13% to EUR 1.23/kg.

The price of white brined cheese from cow's milk rose by 0.06% to EUR 6.16/kg, while Vitosha-style yellow kashkaval cheese fell by 0.31% to EUR 9.13/kg. Yogurt with a fat content of 3% or more became 5.76% cheaper, at EUR 0.72 for a 400-gram pot, while fresh milk fell by 1.77% to EUR 1.11 per litre. The price of butter in 125-gram packs increased by 3.38% to EUR 1.47 per pack.

Frozen chicken became 1.2% more expensive, reaching EUR 3.70 per kilogramme, while wholesale prices for medium-sized eggs rose by 3.09% to EUR 0.20 each. Rice prices increased by 3.75% to EUR 1.77/kg, while beans rose by 4.31% to EUR 2.13/kg and lentils by 5.74% to EUR 2.10/kg. Type 500 flour also became more expensive, rising by 3.4% to EUR 0.67/kg, while sugar increased by 1.6% to EUR 0.89/kg. The price of sunflower oil fell by 1.36% to EUR 1.74 per litre.
