There is no direct threat to Bulgaria’s security, representatives of the country’s security services said during a working meeting with Prime Minister Rumen Radev, where the security environment and the challenges arising from it were discussed, the Government Information Service said on Monday.

The responsible institutions remain in constant contact with their regional partners and with allies within NATO to ensure timely warnings in the event of a possible escalation of military operations in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Attending the meeting were Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev, State Agency for National Security Chair Plamen Tontchev, State Intelligence Agency Chair Antoan Gechev, Military Intelligence Service Director Brigadier General Venelin Venev, Deputy Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Krasimir Kanev, Deputy Commander of the Air Force Brigadier General Dimitar Georgiev, acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov, and acting Director of the Military Police Service Colonel Hristiyan Hristov.

It transpired at the meeting that measures had been taken to strengthen security at Bezmer Air Base, protect the country’s airspace, and ensure the safety of citizens.

On July 22, Bulgaria’s Parliament authorized the deployment of up to eight KC-135 aircraft with their crews, up to 250 US military personnel with personal weapons and ammunition, and aviation equipment from the United States Armed Forces at Bezmer Air Base from July 24 to October 1, 2026, in support of US operations in the Middle East.
